From the recording Everybody Pays The Rent
This song was inspired in 1974 from watching large RV's come into a camp site when I was living in my van and tent house with my wife and two small kids (3 and 6) and working as a bus boy. It was about envy, jealousy and acceptance.
Lyrics
On my way to work this morning
A familiar scene arrived
The speed limit sign said 50
And The traffic is moving 5
It seems like nothing’ I do is right
Getting’ tough just to stay alive
Then I stop myself from thinking
These thoughts don’t do me no good
Got to take things as they are
Not the way they should
Any way I start my day
My time is simple spent
Nobody gets a free ride
Every body pays the rent
I wish I had the power
I would straighten out the world
At the top of the agenda
Every guy would have his girl
And every mother would haver her son
And every father a friend
Then I stop myself from thinking
These thoughts don’t do me no good
Got to take things as they are
Not the way they should
Any way I start my day
My time is simple spent
Nobody gets a free ride
Every body pays the rent
I woke up early this morning
Just to watch the day go by
People do the strangest things
But then again, so do I
If I find myself a wondering
Is his life better than mine
Then I stop myself from thinking
These thoughts don’t do me no good
Got to take things as they are
Not the way they should
Any way I start my day
My time is simple spent
Nobody gets a free ride
Every body pays the rent
